Preparing for the Conferences

Busy day!  I went over to teach in the morning, but all the ladies were busy, so Rachel and I just ended up playing with the kids for a while.  We met all the other American representatives, including President Schroeder, who came in this past weekend but had been in other areas in Zambia until late last night.  I had a nice long morning workout, and then we went over to help Anne wash dishes.  Anne and several of wives are cooking for the 60+ men here and the dishes pile up quickly.  We washed them African style – we had one big bucket with soap and water, another bucket underneath the bore hole for rinsing, and then laundry baskets to put the wet ones in so they could dry in the sun.  Bertha (one of the wives) kept laughing hysterically at us.  We couldn’t figure out why – she was just cracking up, leaning against the wall, unable to stand up straight.  Still, we haven’t figured it out.  We also helped serve the men their meal of nsima (maize that is ground up and boiled…think of Cream of Wheat, if you’ve ever had that.  That is the main and really only staple food here.  It’s eaten with different sauces, called relish.  It comes out in these big blobs, and the people roll it around in their hand and then dip it in the different relishes), rape (cooked kale with different spices), cabbage, rice, and sausages.  Preschool was just getting out, so we watched the little kids play kickball for a while.  Some of the really little ones, like Brian, think I’m their jungle gym, and enjoy crawling all over me.  Then we played a fun game of volleyball with the men before going back, cooking dinner, and then helping Dee set up for the fellowship hour.  We served snacks (chips and popcorn) to all the men.   We didn’t get back until after ten, and after being on my feet all day long, I’m tired and ready for bed!
